SUPPORT IN CRISIS?

Building Independence Through Housing

A safe, stable home can be an important part of recovery.

Through a partnership that provides furnished apartments and ongoing support, six Coast Mental Health clients are building greater independence while staying connected to the services and relationships that have supported them throughout their recovery journey.

Developed in partnership with Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) and Affordable Housing Societies, the project provides residents with fully furnished apartments where they can strengthen life skills, establish routines and gain confidence living independently.

Six individuals have successfully transitioned from more intensive, supported housing programs operated by Coast Mental Health into affordable housing. Coast staff continue to provide outreach and in-reach support, helping residents navigate day-to-day challenges while staying connected to programs, activities and trusted relationships.

Clients describe the experience as both meaningful and empowering.

One resident shared:

“What I like about going to SIL is that it’s a major step in the reintegration process, so it makes my hard work feel validated. Along with that, it lets me participate in a more normal life again.”

Another resident described Supported Independent Living as the “cornerstone” of their treatment, highlighting the importance of having a safe home, managing their own schedule and becoming an active member of their community.

Their experiences demonstrate the impact that stable housing and ongoing support can have on a person’s recovery journey. By creating a bridge between supported programs and independent community living, the initiative helps residents continue moving toward their goals while remaining connected to the supports that matter most.
