Coast Mental Health Board of Directors

Coast Mental Health is governed by a volunteer board of directors whose collective range of experience and expertise guide our strategic direction.

We are deeply grateful to our board and council members for generously sharing their expertise, talents, insight and time to help create a community where people living with mental illness can thrive and contribute.

Stephen Butz

Chair – President & Chief Executive Officer, YMCA of Greater Vancouver; Chief Executive Officer, Canada West YMCA Regional Development  Centre

Over his 36-year career, Stephen Butz has been working to strengthen the foundations of community through the YMCA. Holding leadership positions with the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and the Canada West YMCA Regional Development Centre, Stephen leads the largest and most diverse social charity in British Columbia. The YMCA mission reaches out to more than 130,000 people through a network of over 200 program sites and facilities.

Stephen accepted his first association leadership role in the mid-1980s as the CEO of the YMCA of Cambridge, Ontario, and moved on to senior leadership opportunities in St. Catharines, Hamilton and Niagara.

Stephen holds undergraduate degrees in physical education and business and a master’s degree in management sciences from Springfield College in the United States. Among his many community affiliations, Stephen has served as the vice-chair of the board for the Niagara Health System, a board member for the Niagara Community Foundation and the Meridian Credit Union, a member of the Cabinet of the United Way of the Lower Mainland Cabinet, and an advisor for the Business Council of BC.

Stephen Butz

Dallas Leung

Vice-Chair – Vice President, Global Container Terminals Canada

Dallas is the Vice President of Finance and Administration at Global Container Terminals Canada. Canada’s largest container terminal operator, where he is responsible for the accounting, financial planning & analysis, procurement, risk management and administration for the company.

A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Business Valuator (CBV), Dallas received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia. He also obtained the Chartered Director (C.Dir.) designation from The Directors College (2020).

Dallas also volunteers at the YMCA BC Foundation and YMCA BC Properties Foundation.  He was previously the Chair of the YMCA of Greater Vancouver.  Dallas was born and raised in Vancouver.

Harry Gray

Secretary – Executive Director of the Resident Doctors of BC 

Harry is the Executive Director of the Resident Doctors of BC (RDBC) where he leads a membership of 1350 Residents involved in all aspects of medical training.  Harry has over 35 years of experience in the post-secondary and health industries where he has worked in a variety of executive administration roles.  In his current role at RDBC, Harry is works with Health employers, the University of BC and the Ministry of Health. 

Harry has served on the Board of Covenant House Vancouver, where he was Vice Chair and chaired the HR & Governance committee; the PuSh International Arts Festival, where he co-chaired the hiring of a new Artistic and Executive Director; and the (Surrey) Options Community Services Society where he sits on the Audit and Risk Management Committee.  Additionally, he serves as a tribunal member on the Community Care and Assisted Living Appeal Board. 

Harry holds a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School Business and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.  Harry joined the Coast Foundation Society Board of Directors in November 2019.

Harry Gray

Secretary – Executive Director of the Resident Doctors of BC

Benita Loughlin

Treasurer – Retired Chartered Professional Accountant and Tax Partner, KPMG

Benita is a Chartered Professional Accountant and was a tax partner at KPMG until she retired on September 20, 2022. She was instrumental in developing the Global Mobility Services tax practice at KPMG in Vancouver. In her 36 years with the firm, she focused on tax planning and compliance issues for estates, trusts and individuals in a US and cross-border context. 

Benita has published, spoken and taught extensively on multiple aspects of cross-border personal tax, specializing in US estate planning, expatriation planning and investment in US real estate. Benita has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from UBC. She was an Officer of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver from 2014 to 2020 (President in 2019) and was also a director on the KPMG Canada Board from 2014 to 2020 (Vice Chair in 2019 and 2020). 

She was an elected  Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC in 2021.   Fellowship formally recognizes those members who have rendered exceptional service to the profession, whose achievement in their careers and/or contributions to the community have earned them distinction and brought honour to the profession. 

Mark Brady

Director – Coast Mental Health, Chair Planning & Partnership Committee, Coast Mental Health; and Co-Chair for the Red Fish Healing Centre Partnership in Care Committee.

Mark joined the Coast Mental Health Board in 2023 and is the Committee Chair for the Planning & Partnership Committee, which consists of clients and tenants from various Coast programs.

Mental illness has touched Mark’s life, resulting in hospitalization and attending various treatment programs. While Mark is now able to manage his wellness, he’s passionate about advocating for others who may be struggling to navigate similar healthcare systems.

Mark has been involved in several patient care projects to support treatment programs and virtual health practices. More recently, Mark provided his insights to support health professionals understand behaviours and symptoms related to mental health and addiction disorders.

Prior to his role as patient partner and advocate, Mark was a Professional Engineer in both Canada and the UK.

Mark Brady

Steve Fleck

Director – Chief Practice and Project Officer, Stantec

Steve is Stantec’s Chief Practice and Project Officer, a role that combines the responsibility for how Stantec executes work and the responsibility for governance, oversight and execution of all projects for clients. With 31,000 employees operating on 6 continents, Steve’s responsibilities extend around the globe. He has Profit & Loss responsibility for Stantec corporate costs, representing a $500m budget and direct responsibility for Project Delivery, Practice Management, Risk Management (inhouse Legal and Insurance), Health, Safety & Security, IT, Procurement and Stantec’s industry leading Sustainability (ESG) program.

Steve has successfully managed and implemented complex projects around the world from Sweden to Chile to the United States, UK and Canada. He has managed projects in numerous sectors including complex process plants for the Forest & Energy industries, large water treatment facilities, and complex Public Private Partnerships in healthcare, transportation, wastewater, and education.

Pat Ryan

Director – Retired Chief Building Official, City of Vancouver

Pat brings over 25 years of professional engineering and leadership experience to the board. Most recently, he had been the Chief Building Official, Development, Building and Licenses for the City of Vancouver and prior to that held varied senior positions in Engineering and Emergency Management.

Previous work was with TransLink, the Province and several consulting companies both in Vancouver and Melbourne, Australia.

He has extensive leadership and negotiation skills, a sustainability background, administrative and management experience and endless enthusiasm. Pat was especially focused on accessibility and visual disability issues and the safety and well being of the public.

Derek Smith

Director – Principal and Structural Engineer, Rockingham Engineering Ltd. 

Derek Smith has always wanted to ‘give back’. Diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder in his mid-thirties, he values the support that he has received from his counsellor, psychiatrist, family and friends. He firmly believes that one can embrace a healthy, successful and fulfilling life while grappling with the challenges of mental health.

Derek graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1988 and furthered his studies at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies and graduated with a Master of Engineering Degree in Aerospace Science and Engineering in 1990.

He has been the principal of Rockingham Engineering Ltd. since 2000, a company which specializes in the structural design of custom homes and renovations on the North Shore, Sea Sky Corridor and Gulf Islands.

He is creative, passionate and cares deeply about connecting with people, as much as the houses they live in. Derek enjoys the collaborative aspect of his job, working with architects and contractors to ensure that the client’s vision becomes reality.

Derek was on the Board of Directors of the Hollyburn Country Club from 2013–2017. He was the Chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee which dealt with plans and projects related to property development on the Hollyburn Lands. Derek looks forward to joining the Coast Mental Health Board of Directors and believes that both his personal and professional experience will be an asset to the Board.

Greg Shea

Director – Vice President, Health Infrastructure and Development, First Nations Health Authority

Greg has over 25 years of management experience that includes working in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, and with all levels of government in multiple jurisdictions across Canada. Greg has significant experience and education in the areas of quality and performance improvement, and a wide-scope of professional experience including construction program management, building portfolio management, human resources leadership, advisory services, auditing, program leadership, policy development and organizational governance. Greg is a member of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation.

Greg Shea

Director – Vice President, Health Infrastructure and Development, First Nations Health Authority

Greg has over 25 years of management experience that includes working in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, and with all levels of government in multiple jurisdictions across Canada. Warren Todd Trippel

Director – Lead Peer Support Worker, Coast Mental Health

In spite of living with a bi-polar mental diagnosis, Todd has overcome many obstacles and challenges in life to provide an excellent example for those suffering from mental illness. 

Having completed a peer support course through Coast Mental Health he has provided volunteer support work at Coast’s Highlands Community Home for eight years and is a lead peer support worker at Coasts Recovery and Rehabilitation Program and Forensic Cottages.  Todd facilitates group sessions and promotes the services of Coast.

Todd brings his experience as a consumer and his perspective from his work experiences at Coast as well as his strong communication and problem-solving skills to the Board of Coast.

Elaine Reynolds, K.C.

Chair – Founding Principal, Legacy Tax & Trust Lawyers (retired)

Elaine was a founding principal of Legacy Tax and Trust Lawyers and practiced law in the areas of tax and estate planning including charitable giving. She was awarded the PEAK Award for Knowledge and Leadership by the Association of Women in Finance and received the Leaders in Learning Award from CLE for her contribution to legal education.  

Elaine is passionate about Coast’s mission and devotes her time to governance and planned giving.   

Elaine Reynolds, K.C.

Chair – Founding Principal, Legacy Tax & Trust Lawyers (retired)

Elaine was a founding principal of Legacy Tax and Trust Lawyers and practiced law in the areas of tax and estate planning including charitable giving. She was awarded the PEAK Award for Knowledge and Leadership by the Association of Women in Finance and received the Leaders in Learning Award from CLE for her contribution to legal education.  

Elaine is passionate about Coast’s mission and devotes her time to governance and planned giving.   

Andrea Mundie

Vice-Chair – COO of Plau MPE and GM of Destiny Media Technologies. 

Andrea also Co-Founded skoah, where she was the former CEO. After her departure several years ago, she started RDCP Consulting Inc and worked with businesses in both Canada and the US to improve their operations and reach their growth goals. 

Andrea is a mother of four, and passionate about supporting women in leadership, and in supporting others on their paths to growth. She recently shared her business experience as a speaker at Harvard Business School’s MBA program and Babson College. In 2016 she was awarded the Veuve Clicquot Canadian Business Woman Award and has received a YWCA Women of Distinction Nomination twice. 

Susan Mueller

Treasurer – Chartered Professional Accountant (retired)

As a Chartered Professional Accountant with a background in nonprofit administration, Susan is well versed in the areas of finance, governance, compliance reporting and capital projects management.

Her involvement with Coast Mental Health Foundation comes from wanting to make a difference to people who are struggling with mental illness.

Susan Mueller

Laura Edwards

Director – Executive Director Advancement, York House School (retired)

Laura Edwards is a professional in diverse areas, including fundraising, community building, marketing, governance, financial planning, and leadership. Laura’s work has embraced creating a culture of giving for organizations often with little or no current fundraising. She establishes meaningful relationships, locally and globally while leading Advancement teams through successful annual and capital campaigns.

Laura has received awards for her work, and commitment to the community including the HRH Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee, and Diamond Jubilee Medal for volunteerism, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Outstanding Fundraiser Award.

Pamela Martin

Director – Broadcast Journalist (retired)

For over 30 years as an award-winning news anchor and journalist, Pamela was a trusted voice bringing news and critical issues into the homes of millions of British Columbians. Pamela’s accomplishments are too many to mention and notably she has been an agent for change in the province engaging with various stakeholders and helping to advance the issues of the BC economy for families.

In addition to her new role with the Coast Mental Health Foundation Board, Pamela is also on the boards of the Women’s Leadership Circle Advisory Council of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade; Pacific Autism Family Centre Foundation; and Face The World Foundation.

Gail Shimoda-Klassen

Director – Director, Western Canada, Citi Private Bank

With an MBA from Dalhousie University, Gail brings over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry where she has held a number of senior management positions.

She has also held various positions with not-for-profit causes from chairing fundraising activities to leading a team to help refurbish a schoolhouse for underprivileged children.

Tracey Wade

Director – Communications & Fundraising

Tracey has an extensive TV news, media, and writing background and, in addition to her work at Coast Mental Health, devotes herself full-time to charitable causes such as BC Children’s Hospital, the BC SPCA, the Canadian Institute for the Blind, and Whistler Animal Galore. 

Tracey has been involved with the Courage to Come Back Awards for over ten years.  Her goals are to end the stigma around mental illness and foster meaningful development of programs at Coast while continuing to apply her talents in fundraising and event management.

Angela Huck

Director – Wealth Advisor, Associate Advising Representative, Connor, Clark & Lunn Private Capital Ltd.

Angela has worked in the finance industry for 17 years, supporting clients in the area of investment strategy and planning, and is currently Vice-President of Connor, Clark & Lunn Private Capital. She has a B.A. degree in Psychology, an MBA and holds the Chartered Investment Management (CIM) and Chartered Financial Divorce Specialists (CFDS) designations. Angela has always been active in the community. Over the last decade, she has served as a director on the One Girl Can Board and volunteered in a number of local organizations, with a focus on empowerment and education of single mothers and girls. As a new member of the Coast Mental Health Foundation Board, Angela is passionate about raising awareness and support for those experiencing mental illness and homelessness.

 

Janet Majendie

Director – Senior Investment Manager, Scotia McLeod (retired)

Janet is a retired Senior Investment Advisor and partner of Majendie Wealth Management, most recently at Scotia McLeod. Prior to her move to finance, Janet was a Senior Speech-Language Pathologist with Vancouver Health and before that, an Associate Publisher with Boulevard Magazine in Victoria. Janet is a skilled fundraiser, and during her six years on the Board of York House School, chaired the Advancement Committee. Prior to joining the Board Janet led a number of fundraising campaigns for the school.

 

Janet co-developed and Chaired Coast Mental Health Foundation’s Courage 2 Go Further, a fundraiser held over 2020, 2021 and 2022 to fill some of the gaps in fundraising when the Courage To Come Back Awards could not be held in person due to pandemic restrictions. Janet currently helps with major gift giving and serves on the Foundation’s Investment Committee.

Janet Majendie

Shirley Broadfoot

Founding Director – President, Sierra Communications Ltd. (retired)

Shirley has been a volunteer with Coast Mental Health since 1997. She has held numerous positions at Coast including serving on the Board of the Coast Foundation Society, the Founding Chair of the Courage To Come Back Awards and a Founding Director as well as Chair of the Coast Mental Health Foundation.

She is the retired President of Sierra Communications Ltd. which gave her the opportunity to work with hundreds of Non-Profit groups across Canada through the sale of Entertainment Coupon books. This work reinforced her appreciation for the value of volunteerism in a healthy community.

She combines her passion for the important work of Coast Mental Health with her background in business, marketing, and communications to provide support for Coast’s mission in every way she can.

Terry Holland

Director – Managing Partner, Krystal Growth Partners

Terry Holland has been involved in the Canadian private equity industry for over 30 years. A commerce graduate of the University of British Columbia, Terry earned his CA designation in 1981 and was awarded the FCA designation in 2009. Currently Terry is Managing Partner of Krystal Growth Partners, which invests in and works with small to mid-sized western Canadian companies. Terry is a past Chair of the BC Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and of YPO (Gold) and is also a graduate of Harvard’s President’s Program in Leadership. Also active in his community, Terry is a past chair of the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC, and past board member of St. George’s School.

Terry Holland

Dinyar Marzban

Director – Family Law Lawyer and Mediator at Jenkins Marzban Logan LLP

A leading family lawyer in British Columbia, Dinyar Marzban has practiced all aspects of family law, including mediation, trial, and appellate work. Called to the bar in 1982 and appointed King’s Counsel in 2004, he now limits his practice to acting as a family law mediator, most often retained to resolve cases involving high incomes and complex financial issues.

Dinyar has contributed to family law reform, legal education and pro bono work. He was one of the original authors and editors of the Family Law Sourcebook for British Columbia, which remains the leading family law publication in the province. He has also authored numerous articles and presented at many family law conferences. He is an ongoing volunteer with Access Pro Bono and has volunteered for Rise/ Women’s Legal Centre.

His other career highlights include starting the Supreme Court pro bono family mediation service, chairing the Vancouver Family Law Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association, and serving on the board for Legal Aid BC from 2014 to 2020.

Dinyar is a fellow of both the American College of Trial Lawyers and International Society of Barristers. He is consistently recognized as a leading practitioner in the field of family law by Lexpert, Doyles Guide and Best Lawyers, the latter naming him Family Law “Lawyer of the Year” for 2021
