Dr. Bill MacEwan Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award in Addiction Medicine
We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Bill MacEwan, Medical Director at Coast Mental Health, has been awarded the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award in Addiction Medicine by the Western Canada Addiction Forum (WCAF).
Dr. MacEwan first partnered with Coast Mental Health to establish an in-house psychiatric clinic in Maple Ridge, which has been transformational for residents in supported housing. In 2023, MacEwan joined Coast Mental Health as its first Medical Director.

“Dr. Bill MacEwan brings a rare blend of compassion, humility, and clinical excellence to his work. He has never hesitated to show up and support people whether they are on the streets, in shelters, or in supportive housing, wherever people need care the most. His impact on mental health in our province is profound, and his continued involvement with Coast Mental Health is a true gift to our community” says Keir Macdonald, CEO, Coast Mental Health.
Dr. MacEwan’s legacy is firmly rooted in his tireless advocacy for individuals living with severe mental illness and substance use disorders. His outreach in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is often described as legendary and has helped some of the most vulnerable individuals access life-saving care and support.
Known for his trailblazing spirit, Dr. MacEwan has initiated several ground-breaking programs in British Columbia, including the Early Psychosis Intervention Program and the Urban Psychiatry Program at St. Paul’s Hospital. His influence extends through his leadership of the Vancouver Hotel Study, a landmark research initiative focused on health outcomes for individuals with co-occurring conditions.
In recognition of his contributions, WCAF has also donated $2,500 to the Coast Mental Health Foundation, a generous gesture that will help us continue our vital work.
This award highlights the extraordinary impact one individual can have. We are honored to have Dr. MacEwan as part of the Coast Mental Health family.
