Coast Mental Health recently took center stage on Global News BC’s Health Matters segment, highlighting the incredible impact of the Courage To Come Back Awards and inviting British Columbians to nominate their everyday heroes for 2026.
In the interview, CEO Keir Macdonald joined David Chalk, a 2025 award recipient in the Mental Health category, as he shared inspiring stories of resilience and hope.
Despite being a successful tech entrepreneur, David revealed that he couldn’t read until his 60s. Today, he’s using his experience to empower others through Reading Road, an AI-powered literacy platform designed to support marginalized communities. His journey embodies the spirit of these awards: overcoming adversity and giving back to the community.
What Are the Courage To Come Back Awards?
For nearly three decades, these awards have celebrated British Columbians who have faced life-changing challenges —whether medical, mental health, addiction, or youth-related and turned their struggles into strength.
Each year, hundreds of nominations are reviewed by panels of health professionals, advocates, and community leaders. Four recipients are chosen and honored at a gala event at the Vancouver Convention Centre each spring, with their stories shared widely to inspire others.
Why It Matters
As Keir emphasized during the interview:
| “The most powerful thing we can do for somebody else is to see and accept them for who they are.” |
These awards are more than recognition; they are a platform for change, breaking stigma and encouraging conversations about resilience and recovery.
