Employment is an important part of recovery for persons with a mental illness and is the central component of the Coast Social Enterprise Foundation. Wade, a four-year employee, says, “The job is something I can be proud of. I know that any additional money goes back to Coast and helps to make a difference in the lives of deserving people.” Prior to working for Landscaping With Heart, Wade had a hard time maintaining employment. His work for the organization has contributed significantly to his recovery.
Landscaping With Heart attained some significant milestones in 2008/09. Revenues increased over 2006 and the number of people with mental illness employed rose from seven in 2006 to twenty in 2008. Despite revenue and capacity increases, break-even status has eluded Landscaping With Heart.
This year, the Board initiated a full review of operations to move them to a more sustainable entity. The review will fully assess the businesses and establish a suitable market orientation. Specific components will include a market analysis, data on customer and employee satisfaction, and strategies to establish a sound customer base. This will solidify our market niche and provide employment opportunities to build and strengthen our workforce.
Coast Social Enterprise Foundation Board has worked extremely hard to guide Landscaping With Heart and develop the next steps for the social venture enterprise. Thanks to Wayne Rawcliffe (Chair), Peter Dueck, Bruce Lounds (Treasurer) and Sarah Moen for their hard work and dedication to this project.
